Have all of you who speak Portuguese seen the thread on the Brazilian version of this vid? It's full of the most UNBELIEVABLE prejudice, racism and ethnocentric rubbish. Worth a read, though, and a few comments.

No Baraitalo. Just because evidence has been sent it does not mean brazilian law is working. Firstly this situation should never have happened to begin with. Secondly the law will only be proved to be working when Greenpeace and international journalists are able to FREELY return and move within Brazil without fearing for their lives and without intimidation. When this happens then you may say the law has worked - which I very much hope will be the case.

I agree with you that wasting and using too much energy in developed countries urgently needs action and change. And many countries and individuals are trying to do just that. Anything is possible if we work together. Please stop making this an argument between Brazil V The rest of World. Its about protecting our environment and freedom of press.

The kyoto protocol has been in place for some time. I believe at the last count over 170 countries have ratified it. No it's not perfect, for sure there is still a long way to go. Especially with the USA who is by far has the largest ecofootprint but hasn't ratified KP yet. However at the moment KP isn't enough. If it were then maybe Greenpeace and others wouldn't need to be in Brazil?

To protect the rainforest there is the Kyoto Protocol. Why has it not been put in place yet? It is not Brazil tha's stopping it. As for Climate change, a good start would be to try and lower consumism in yodeveloped countries. Is it possible?

also, OPAN and Greenpeace have already requested an official enquiry, and handed over digital image (pics and vids) and this has been sent from the procurator in cuiabá to the federal authorities. hence it is clear that brazilian law IS working.

I agree with you. Most countries, including mine (the UK) has problems with the media reporting the truth and indeed the Government on many subjects, including the Iraq war, nuclear defence and power, GM crops. All these subjects have international interest whether it be in your country or mine. If the UK was home to the last fresh water I would expect you in Brazil to have something to say about it.

Mike, if you talk about able bodied people, I disagree with you. There are so many way to commit suicide. I am only worried about the fact that the govt is so opposed to euthanasia for really old or terminally ill people. I think euthanasia should be legal (for old/ ill people). Let able people shoot themselves or throw off a tall building, or drink poison. No need to despair, just persevere.

Yeah the refusal to allow terminally ill people to go peacefully and painless is simply due to Christian Zealots as you put it. But I'm referring to suicide as a whole across society. There are, unfortunately, some people in society who are so down trodden and trapped, and at a high risk of suicide. In a Humanistic point of view, if the obstacles they face are insurmountable, then clearly depression ensues.

Mike, I disagree with you here. I thought that you were referring to people that are terminally ill and want to kill themselves. They can't work. However, the idea that sick people spend money it is true, but the money would have been spent by other people on other goods or services.

I'm not specifically talking about the US. But you do make a point which is entirely true. However, you don't make money giving people nothing - a dead person isn't buying cell phones, cars or air-conditioning. All these things bring benefits, clearly, but the major benefits go to top. The main people who would suicide are the working poor - those with no means of upwards mobility. If many of them suicided then a source of cheap labour would gradually fade away.

Are you really that silly as you pretend to be? The govt wants a productive economy for the few? At this moment in US there about 200mil cell phones, about the same number of cars, air conditioning and all. Is this how economy benefits the few? Never mind that nobody had that 50 years ago. The govt are against euthanasia because of the stupidity of christian zealots in the country.

I honestly think governments are against assisted suicide and euthanasia due to the social and economic impact it would have. Firstly, governments can spend thousands educating an individual. I believe they want that back. Add to that the cost of lost productivity due to funerals and morning, and one less worker in society, they don't like allowing people a right to die. It's not about caring for other human beings, it's about providing a productive economy for a privilaged few to benefit from.
