What makes Jazz improvisation good is a number of things. Mainly, how good of a "storyteller" the musician is and how well the musician gets into the musical structure of the song itself. I understand what you mean about background music. You have to get used to listening to the legends, such as Coltrane and Miles Davis. Unfortunately, there are a lot of bad improvisors out there that call themselves Jazz musicians, and that's what your ear may be catching.

Ironically, Vince Guaraldi, is the man behind Charlie Brown. A perfect person to listen to. He is an excellent improvisor of Latin Jazz.

What do you mean "free improv" ? Do you think all the song is improvised or do you mean he sounds "free" when he improvises ? If it is that, it does imrprovise "free" but "out".

consider the mouth as an instrument and the worded sounds as a voice of an instrument and you'll see that rappers are reproducing improvisation in another way with rhythmic effect in speech as well...this is to uhrkraft..if u get to understand jazz well you'll appreciate rap or hip hop more.just don't mind their themes.
